Short Bio

Fine artist, illustrator, writer, teacher

Statement

To be true to myself, true to my subject, true to humanity and truly human. Playfully, seriously, discovered and remembered, the truths of life individuated and interwoven, independent and unified can be found in the mark-making: the statements and the questions, the authentic and the artificial, my eyes through my hands open yours inward. A trip, a memory, a desire, an urge, a fear, a wish, a hope, a dream, something beautiful, something terrible, something self-evident and mysterious, something unspoken but seen and something known. My opinions, my values, my loves, my being are all on full display, and by them you know your own.

Biography

Stephen Teater is a professional illustrator, fine artist, and art teacher from Bend, Oregon. Fortunate in the rigor and variety of his formal education and training, and in the skill, knowledge, experience and philosophies of his teachers and mentors, Stephen began his graduate studies as a concept artist and presently focuses on fine art and narrative illustration. Every artwork he makes builds, expands upon and is informed by the preceding one. In this manner, his work is continually evolving and full of variety -- in subject matter, medium and execution.
In college, Stephen studied fine art, as well as music theory and composition. He earned his MFA in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and along the way he has explored and enjoys working in many mediums and studying all subjects. Art is his means of expression and meditation as much as it is a philosophy, a science, a method of observing, experiencing, understanding and communicating: how he sees life and himself, how he'd like it and he to be.
